What is Dexterity in robotics?
Dexterity describes how precisely a robot can grasp, reorient, assemble, and place objects. It includes not only gripping force, but also fine motion control, contact adaptation, and stability during manipulation.
Why is it difficult?
Real environments are highly variable in surface texture, friction, geometry, and weight distribution. Replicating human-like hand capability with sufficient degrees of freedom and feedback remains a major technical challenge.
Why does it matter commercially?
Dexterity limits determine which tasks can be automated safely and economically. In humanoid deployment, low-dexterity tasks are usually targeted first, with expansion to finer operations as capability improves.
