What is a Cobot?

A cobot (collaborative robot) is an industrial robot built to work alongside humans in shared workspaces. Unlike traditional industrial robots that usually require fenced-off zones, cobots are designed for closer human interaction under controlled safety rules.

How does it work?

Cobots typically include force and torque sensing, speed limits, collision detection, and emergency-stop logic. Many deployments also use guided teaching, where operators physically move the arm through a task path so the robot can repeat it consistently.

Why does it matter?

Cobots are effective in high-mix, low-volume operations where workflows change often. They help teams automate repetitive steps without committing to large, rigid automation systems, improving flexibility while keeping humans in supervisory and exception-handling roles.
