What is Citation Share?

Citation Share is the percentage a specific brand or domain holds among all sources an AI answer engine cites for the same query. While Citation Rate is an absolute metric that tracks "how often is my brand cited?", Citation Share is a relative metric that tracks "how much of the citation pie do I own versus competitors?"

It applies the classic marketing concept of Share of Voice (SOV) to AI-answer surfaces, and is a core KPI for GEO and AEO analysis tools.

Citation Rate vs Citation Share

Item Citation Rate Citation Share
Numerator Responses that cite my brand Times my brand was cited
Denominator All responses sampled All sources cited for the same query
Tells you Absolute exposure frequency Relative slice versus competitors
Use Single-brand trend tracking Category competitive analysis

Example: for the query "best Korean CRM," if the AI cites five brands and one of them is yours, your Citation Share is 20%. If the category leader holds 50%, the 30-point gap is the GEO gap you need to close.

Measurement caveats

  • Sample size. AI responses vary across runs, so each query must be repeated 5–10 times before the share stabilizes.
  • Query bundle. Use the average share across 10–20 core category queries — a single-query share is too noisy for category-level visibility.
  • Per platform. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity cite differently. Decompose share by platform rather than aggregating.
